Veerless Ventures: Our Commitment to Supporting Our Small Business Peers

We know that bespoke consulting projects and counsel is expensive. For most small businesses, hiring a consulting firm to help with strategy, reputation, and sustainability sits somewhere between “someday” and “never,” even when the owner cares deeply about how the business treats its people, its community, and the planet. We also know how impactful small businesses can be to the global economy, and how deeply committed to sustainability so many small businesses are.

Since Veerless’ inception, it’s always bothered us that our services can’t always fit the small business budget. Most Veerless clients are multi-billion-dollar companies. We build their sustainability strategies, write their reports, and prepare them for regulations around the world. We love that work, and we love the companies we have the privilege to serve each day. But Veerless is a small business too, and we see ourselves in the coffee shop owner sourcing ethically, the studio founder weighing B Corp certification, and the landscaper trying to cut fuel costs and emissions at the same time.

So as a small, Minneapolis-grown B Corp, we are committed to extending the frameworks and knowledge we build for the world’s largest companies to small businesses as well. We call this work Veerless Ventures. Read more on how we engage with small businesses and share our knowledge and resources.

Getting Innovative with Employee Resource Groups: The Stronghold of DEI Programming Globally

We have all witnessed the backlash and attacks on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs in recent years. I could write a book about how deeply I disagree with these concerns, but today is not the day for that post. Instead, I want to talk about a set of programs that, in many cases, were immune from the cuts happening in DEI in many companies – employee resource groups or ERGs.

As some companies cut chief diversity officer roles, retired public representation goals, withdrew from external indices, and scrubbed language off their websites, a strange thing happened. Most left their ERGs intact. I chalk this up to the fact that most companies downsizing DEI really just downsized the D and E. Inclusion, and the importance of employee engagement largely remained apolitical.

An HR Brew analysis of 52 companies that changed DEI course in 2024/25 found only 11 made changes to their ERGs. Gravity Research found the same pattern: most ERGs are still running, with adjustments to how membership is described rather than whether the group exists at all. So let’s talk about ERGs: why they stayed above the fray and how innovation in these areas can strengthen the social impact pillar of your internal corporate responsibility work.

Where Data Infrastructure Meets Community: Cologix in Jacksonville, North Florida

When people talk about data centers today, the conversation typically starts with the significant growth of the industry.

AI training and AI inference. Hybrid and multi-cloud. Data. Compute. Megawatts. Cooling technologies.

But if you spend time on the ground, another reality becomes clear. Data centers aren’t just a part of the digital infrastructure. They’re embedded in their communities and consider themselves neighbors.

The Price of Silence: A Playbook for Corporate Activism in Unsettled Times

In early 2026, Veerless’ headquarters city of Minneapolis lived through something most companies aren’t trained to navigate: sustained ICE enforcement activity that touched neighborhoods, families, and in many cases, our clients’ own employees. Leadership teams across the Twin Cities faced a version of the same question, over and over. Do we say something, or do we stay quiet and hope it passes?

We watched too many companies choose silence by default, not because leaders didn’t care, but because nobody had given them a framework for doing anything else.

Your 2024 ESG, Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility Reading List

It’s year 6 of my annual reading list dedicated to the books that will make you a more sustainable, ethical, responsible leader. This year has been a wild ride for me and for my team. After almost 4 years as a solopreneur, I decided to expand my business in 2023. I brought on a team of incredible leaders this year, rebranded our company – Veerless – and continued to help companies of all shapes and sizes grow their sustainable impact globally. Together with my team, we’ve been focused on “leveling up” all year, and the books I bring to this list have been instrumental in that process. These books have been the cornerstone of my learning as a leader and my team’s learning processes as they continue to build their expertise, breadth and depth our clients need to succeed.
