Almost exactly five years ago, I conducted what I later referred to as a “controlled burn” of a successful career (LinkedIn article of the same title here). I left a sustainability role in one of the largest companies in the world unclear about what was ahead. My path to consulting was a pleasant surprise. A few consulting projects to bridge the gap to a new corporate role turned into falling in love with the variety and independence this path offered me personally and professionally. But the prospect of entrepreneurship was terrifying. In summer 2019, my husband and I took a trip to Italy and a tour of the Colosseum. I stood on the floor and hearkened back to the words of two of my favorite people – Teddy Roosevelt and Brené Brown – the story about the “man in the arena.” On that trip, I decided to go all in on solopreneurship, and nearly five years later, it’s the best decision I’ve ever made.

In 2022, I found myself at another crossroads. Passionate about my clients and my projects, I hit a ceiling on what I could feasibly take on alone. For more than a year, my closest friends and mentors have been telling me it was time to hire, time to grow. But as with any major decision, I had to weigh the options. Staying on my own meant total autonomy and control, 1:1 relationships with my clients, and sometimes Law and Order in the middle of the afternoon. I realized, though, that I also had so many reasons to grow – deepening our impact, expanding our service models and expertise, and there will always be room for Law and Order in the afternoon every now and then. I decided 2023 would be a year of growth and change for this company, and I’m so proud to share with you some incredible new developments!

#1: Marcy Twete Consulting is launching a new name and brand – Veerless.

I’m sure you’re all wondering – what does Veerless mean?! We worked with the incredible branding geniuses at Obedient Agency to land on this brand that reflects our values of innovation, curiosity, collaboration, and awareness. I told the Obedient team what I knew for sure then and now is that I don’t want to build a traditional consulting agency. I want us to bring clients value, not billable hours; forward-motion strategy, not PowerPoint decks that stay in a folder without action; straight-talk, never greenwashing. I believe together we can create long-term sustainability that changes the game intentionally and strategically, not short-term promises that come with astronomical price tags. So we decided “Veerless” was the perfect way to describe us – we’re moving in the right direction – with our clients, and with precision and confidence.

#2: We’re growing with an expanded team of incredibly talented leaders in ESG, technology, ethics, research and design.

There is no honor greater than for a group of people to trust you with their most precious time, talents, and ideas. I take this responsibility more seriously than any I’ve ever embarked on. My husband Charlie Beck joined the company in January as our COO, Kristen Fischer, MSW, LMSW, NSW-C became Senior Consultant this Spring to lend her expertise in healthcare practice and biomedical ethics, and Ann Thomas joins us in July as Senior Consultant with a history of building successful, ethical consulting companies we’re proud to call collaborators. We are supported by incredible partners in design and research and look forward to continued growth in the coming months and years.
